We all know when it comes to exotic supercars like Lamborghini, the usage of rare composite materials comes to mind (especially our favourite model, the Sesto Elemento). To further amp up their research and technology for the usage of carbon fibre, they’re willing to go do that where no man has done before; SPACE.
What started out as a joint research initiative on advanced carbon fibre between Automobili Lamborghini and the Houston Methodist Research Institute has now reached an important milestone. Sometime around next month, a rocket carrying samples of composite materials produced by Lamborghini will be blasted off to the International Space Station (ISS) for some very extreme tests.
Their goal of doing so is basically to test out how the five different composite materials produced by Lamborghini will handle extreme stresses induced by the space environment. The use? Possibly develop next level prosthetic implants, subcutaneous devices, and, without a shadow of a doubt, the next-generation Lamborghini hypercars.
According to Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, “Lamborghini is breaking ground as the first automaker in the world to conduct carbon fibre materials science research on the ISS. In addition to representing an important example of corporate social responsibility, this mission is also fully in line with our philosophy and values. Lamborghini is a brand that has always been committed to going beyond limits in every area of its activity and to being a pioneer in the realm of technology.”
The composite materials will undergo a series of test cycles for six months from temperatures between -40 to +200°C, massive doses of ultraviolet radiation, gamma rays, and the flow of atomic oxygen caused by ionization plus many more. Once they’re back on Earth, Lamborghini will look further into their state and hopefully lead the path in producing even more exotic hypercars here on Earth.
