Mercedes-AMG produces world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine

There’s a newly developed Mercedes-AMG engine that has just started going into production and it means business with loads of power to match. Standing at 421hp, the Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre M 139 engine is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in series production.

The M 139 surpasses the previously most powerful M 133 by a whopping 41hp. Torque has been pushed even further and now, it has 500Nm of gut-wrenching wheel-spinning madness. This is all possible thanks to an innovative production line in Affalterbach together with the “One Man, One Engine” principle.

The four-cylinder available in two output versions will ensure agile performance for the compact models of Mercedes-AMG: with 310 kW (421 hp) as the S-model and with 285 kW (387 hp) in the basic version. This product policy logic has already proved successful in the V8-powered AMG Performance models, and more closely meets customer wishes.

Assembled entirely by hand using the “One Man, One Engine” principle in Affalterbach, working conditions must be at their most optimum levels so that each master builder will produce stunningly perfect Mercedes-AMG engines, each and every time.

The new 2.0-litre firepower comes with a host of upgrades that helps to produces all 421hp which are:

  • Improved positioning of turbo, exhaust manifold, and intake systems
  • New twin scroll turbocharger with roller bearings
  • New electronically controlled wastegate
  • All-aluminium crankcase
  • Cylinder liners coated with NANOSLIDE technology
  • Larger exhaust valves
  • Two-stage fuel injection

According to Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, “We already set the benchmark in the segment with the preceding engine. This fundamentally new four-cylinder presented us with the challenge of doing even better. And we succeeded with a number of sometimes revolutionary solutions. With the M 139, we have once again impressively demonstrated the engine expertise of Mercedes-AMG. Not only is the output per litre unrivalled for a turbocharged engine, the high level of efficiency also demonstrates that the internal combustion engine still has further potential.”
