BMW has just introduced the all-new BMW 1 Series which is said to have completely rebuilt from the ground up. The biggest change is the shift towards its new front-wheel-drive platform for the first time since its inception back in 2004.
So, why front-wheel-drive? The BMW 1 Series is known for being a practical machine and for BMW to raise the bar on providing more interior space and improved practicality, the move towards FWD seems appropriate for the third generation.
Although practicality is the name of the game for the new BMW 1 Series, BMW Product Manager, Jochen Schmalholz ensures that the latest generation model will still provide a dynamic driving experience expected by BMW customers around the world.
This is even more apparent with the 1 Series top-of-the-range model, the BMW M135i xDrive. This variant uses the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system for maximum performance where it can send half of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo engine’s 302hp to the rear axle whenever it is needed.
A best of both worlds when it comes to practicality and performance also means that the new M135i xDrive should be able to bring the fight towards the front-runners of its class, particularly the Volkswagen Golf R and Mercedes-AMG A35.
While the design of the new 1 Series uses the FAAR platform which resulted in the fitment of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder (instead of 3.0-litre six-cylinder), BMW ensure that the model is still very much performance-oriented thanks to a lighter and stiffer chassis, eight-speed automatic gearbox, actuator-controlled wheel slip limitation system (ARB), dynamic stability control (DSC), plus many more.
BMW’s Performance Control System also comes as standard across the range with the incorporation of a multi-link rear axle and boomerang-shaped rear suspension strut for better rigidity. This translates to a 0-100km/h time of only 4.8 seconds and a limited top speed of 250km/h.
Other variants available in the new series include 118i, 116d, 118d, and 120d xDrive diesel. The range offers a variety of power from 114hp up to 188hp with either six-speed manual, seven-speed automatic, or the eight-speed automatic transmission systems. By using the FAAR platform for its chassis, we might also see a hybrid model coming soon.
Step inside the cabin and one will quickly notice a major overhaul, especially with ‘graining effect’ dashboard and door panels, M Sport steering wheel and sport seats, and the BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant thrown into the impressive infotainment package.
We’re talking 8.8-inch standard touchscreen with gesture and voice control (10.25-inch for higher-end variants), fully digital instrument cluster, and a colour heads-up display (HUD).
The UK market will start taking orders this week before official deliveries roll out in September. Prices start from £24,430 up to £36,430 (around RM130,274 – RM194,264). The M135i xDrive is one hot hatchback and we can’t wait for it to arrive at our shores.
