During the recent 21st International Engine + Powertrain of the Year awards ceremony, BMW successfully picked up several awards including a brand-new category introduced this year that is the Best Hybrid Powertrain award. BMW took home the win with their high-scoring BMW i8 model.
An even more impressive feat was the BMW i8 winning the International Engine + Powertrain of the Year award in its class for the fifth year in a row. Its plug-in hybrid drive system earned an astonishing 233 points; 95 points more than the second-place finisher.
The BMW i8 started its award journey at one the world’s most important engine and powertrain award back in 2014 when it received the award for Best New Engine. Since then, it has been awards (70 so far since the awards started back in 1999) after another which only means one thing; BMW’s plug-in hybrid powertrain was introduced ahead of its time and still highly regarded as revolutionary to this day.
The latest version of the BMW i8 delivers 231hp from its three-cylinder combustion engine and a further 143hp for the electric motor that gets its power from a lithium-ion battery. In electric drive mode, the i8 can travel up to 55km and with all power working the all-wheel-drive system, you can be sure that it’ll deliver outright sports performance with dynamic driveability.
It’s no surprise that the ‘sports car of the future’ has topped the registration statistics for new electrified vehicles in Europe and Germany. The other end of the spectrum which is the BMW i3 and everything else in between showcases the physical prowess of the brand in being the market leader for the hybrid category of the world.
