Breaking lap records don’t happen often but when they do, they happen in spectacular fashion. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS recently did so by setting a new production car lap record at Road America with a time of 2:15.17 minutes.
The 6.57-km road course presented quite a challenge for the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with its 14 turns and several elevation changes. Luckily for Porsche, they had David Donohue behind the steering wheel who happens to be a race winner at Le Mans and 24 Hours of Daytona.
The car-driver combo only needed two laps to set the all-new record with all road-legal settings and Porsche-approved Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 tyres. To make things official, Racelogic was there to validate all the data which includes another impressive time set using the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (2:18.57 minutes to be exact).
The very-limited Porsche 911 GT2 RS boasts a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged boxer 6-cylinder engine that has the ability to produce a staggering 691hp at 7,000rpm and 750Nm of maximum torque between 2,500rpm-4,500rpm. That’s 181hp for every litre, folks.
This translates to a top speed of 340km/h and only needing less than 3 seconds to go from 0 to 100km/h. All that is done in a vehicle that weighs only 1,470kg (kerb). Wondering how it’ll do at Sepang International Circuit…
