How serious is Hyundai in going ‘green’ with hydrogen?

The world is entering the future world of motoring and most folks around the globe are already seriously considering embedding green tech into their growing line-up of exciting models.

Hyundai Motor Company is well on their way to this as they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with local energy firms Korea East-West Power (EWP) and Deokyang to generate electricity from hydrogen.

This pilot project between the giant companies promises to deliver 1 megawatt (MW) hydrogen fuel cell power facility where it’ll be used by Hyundai Motor to build their fuel cell system while EWP and Deokyang handling facility management and hydrogen supply respectively.

Scheduled to break ground later this year in Ulsan, the facility will consist of two container-type 500 kW generator modules, each loaded with multiple power modules from Hyundai’s flagship fuel cell vehicle NEXO.

This is seen as a monumental move by Hyundai and this pilot project as they will working with locally-sourced technology in the entire production phase of the fuel cell power facility in Korea.

Not bad at considering that they will be able to supply a grand total of 8,000MWh annually which is enough to power around 2,200 homes with 300KWh of power every month! This is all done with no greenhouse gases or pollution thanks to the use of hydrogen.

The pilot project presents an opportunity for Hyundai Motor to take its fuel cell technology beyond the automotive industry to achieve economy of scale, which will subsequently lead to cost competitiveness, job creation, and growth of other related industries.

Hyundai hopes to foster the fuel cell industry and other related sectors in the future, and will continue its commitment to leverage its fuel cell technology to build a Hydrogen Society in accordance with the FCEV Vision 2030 announced earlier this year.
